Training and Technical Assistance Grant

Office of Violence Against Women (OVW)

In 2005, recognizing that a domestic violence victim might be at great risk after the service of a protective order against an intimate partner,  the Office on Violence Against Women, US Department of Justice awarded the Mary Byron Project a grant to conduct a national pilot on automated victim notification.  After a successful 2 years, with 124 counties using these services and positive feedback from victims and practitioners, OVW awarded another grant for the Mary Byron Project to provide training and technical assistance on:

  • Protective order protocols
  • Automated order of protection notification services and
  • Firearm prohibitions

These activities are tailored to each jurisdiction to enhanced victim safety, perpetrator accountability and inter-jurisdiction enforcement.  These services are offered without costto jurisdictions with OVW grantees and subgrantees.
Our services:

  • Increase the capacity of state protective order registries for prompt notice to and enforcement of orders by police
  • Review and offer recommendations to improve protective order and firearm prohibition protocols
  • Provide best practice information and training on protective order laws, registries, automated protective order notifications, and firearm alerts
  • Assess quantitative and qualitative outcomes regarding system usage and site’s ability to meet practitioner and victim/survivor needs

If recommendations are made, they are developed collaboratively with key stakeholders to enhance and stream line protocols.
